When selecting an inverter for your solar power system, it’s important to know the difference between micro inverters and string inverters. Both types are designed to convert the sun’s energy into electricity you can use in your home. And so let’s explore the difference between them so that you can make a good decision.
Micro Inverters (pictured right) are miniature inverters that are installed on a per panel basis. Every panel has its own inverter, which improves everything. It won’t hurt this other panels if one is in the shade or not performing well. This lets it generate more power and keep the whole thing chugging along well, particularly if some panels are shaded at some point in the day.
Another thing I like about the micro inverters is you can watch to see how each panel is doing. This makes it simple to tell if something is going wrong and lets you maintain a healthy system. For one thing, micro inverters are typically simpler and cleaner to install and maintain string inverters, so that’s what most homeowners install for home solar systems.
String inverters are larger and are hooked up to multiple solar panels in a row, or “string. " This is because every panel in a string relies on the inverter. If one panel gets shaded or performs poorly, the effect can be felt by all of the panels in that string. This is known as the “Christmas light effect” — the entire string performs only as well as the weakest panel.
String inverters also may be cheaper up front, but they may not perform as well. With string inverters, you can’t monitor the performance of each panel, so it can be more difficult to identify and repair issues. But they are a popular feature of larger solar projects, where every dollar counts.
While micro inverters and string inverters both have their positives and negatives. Micro inverters are also more efficient, which means that they perform better and allow you to test each panel individually, which is great for residential applications. String inverters may be a more cost-effective choice for large projects, but they may not perform as well, or allow you to monitor each panel.
